Concept Based Unit Development

This session is designed to assist you with designing your local curriculum using a ConceptĀ­-Based curriculum and instructional design model. As you explore and engage with the various components of a quality concept based unit, you will discuss strategies that help to promote increased inquiry in K-12 Social Studies classroom.



Aligned North Carolina Professional Teaching Standards
Standard I - Teachers demonstrate leadership.
Standard II - Teachers establish a respectful learning environment for a diverse population of students.
Standard III - Teachers know the content that they teach.
Standard IV - Teachers facilitate learning for their students.
Standard V - Teachers reflect on their practice.




Session Objectives
  • To increase participants understanding of how to develop concept-based units of instruction
  • To provide participants the opportunity to collaborate with social studies educators in other districts and schools to develop your local curricula

  1. What is the value of planning and teaching using the Concept Based Curriculum and Instruction (CBCI) Framework conceptual framework?
  2. Why is it important to incorporate multiple strands of the social studies disciplines into classroom instruction?
  3. How does the conceptual framework of the Social Studies Essential standards prepare students to be college, career and civic ready?
