An important part of preparing students to be C3 ready is allowing them to have opportunities to collaborate, communicate and take action outside of the classroom.

Communication Conclusions:
Students need to be provided opportunities to collaborate with others as they communicate and critique their conclusions in public venues. Critiquing conclusions requires an examination of sources, consideration of how evidence is being used to support claims, and an appraisal of the structure and form of arguments. The critiquing of arguments and explanations deepens students' understanding of concepts and tools in the disciplines, and helps strengthen their conclusions. Students should be able to express their views in a way that are persuasive and contributes to collective understanding of issues.

Argumentative Writing provides students with the ability to write logical arguments based on substantive claims, sound reasoning and relevant evidence. Products such as essays, reports, speeches, panel discussions, proposals, debates and multimedia presentations offer students opportunities to represent their ideas in a variety of forms and communicate their conclusions to a range of audiences.

Taking Informed Action:
In social studies, students use disciplinary knowledge, skills, and perspectives to inquire about problems, deliberate with others concerning how to address issues and take independent and constructive action. As you are allowing your students to take informed action you may want to explore the following approaches to teaching and learning:
  • Service Learning: Learning that links academic contents standards and community based service in ways that engage students, parents, volunteers, and community members.
  • Performance Based Learning: Learning that emphasizes students being able to do or perform specific skills by engaging students in authentic and meaningful activities and task.
  • Project Based Learning: Learning that centers around the students seeking answers to questions through projects, hands on learning and performance.
  • Problem Based Learning: Learning that connects disciplinary knowledge to real world issues by engaging students in a complex and challenging problems.


Teachers should help students determine what they are interested in an encourage them to connect those interest with actionable issues of community and civic importance. Students should be able to apply what they have learned to participate in public discourse on issues of significance. The possibilities for student action are limitless and can include initiatives such as the following:
  • Creating a letter-writing campaign
  • Organizing a community forum
  • Creating a student group to address an issue,
  • Meeting with decision makers
  • Communicating with elected and appointed officials
  • Participating in community meetings
  • Making signs to inform the public
  • Organizing a voter registration campaign
  • Creating Petitions
  • Volunteering

  • As you let students engage in communicating conclusions and taking informed action ask yourself the following questions:
    • Are students provided with the opportunities outside of the classroom to communicate their ideas and take action?
    • Are students grounded and informed by inquiries to ensure that the action is a purposeful, informed, and a reflective experience that has clear links to the curriculum?
    • Can students identify and create opportunities for personal or collaborative action to improve conditions?
    • Can students communicate their ideas effectively with diverse audiences and translate their ideas into appropriate actions to improve conditions?
    • Are students provided with opportunities to critique their work as well as the work of others?
    • Are students provided the time to reflect on their actions?
